Are they women?
Before I answer, let me stipulate that words have many meanings. Even for a word like “Woman” the most widely use meaning for the word “woman” is as a label used to distinguish one of two sexes in mankind (and in animals too). One sex is male (men) and the other is female (women).
Women has also been used to represent weakness. In accounts of Native Americans in the colonial era there are reports that sometimes a warlike tribe would subjugate a less warlike tribe and would consider the entire tribe as women. Such was the way the Iroquois – a ferocious tribe of warriors centered in New York, considered the Lenape – who were in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.
We can argue about the use of women this way, applying late 20th century values, but for most of the history of humans, the notion of women as weak would have been accepted. Oh – weak would have been applied to physical weakness, not moral weakness.
I hear the background noise of discontent. … So what about transwomen?
If we must consider them at all, we can only do so by recognizing that this category is a recent phenomenon, and one that arose from the social sciences and from medicine – not from physical biology. Nor did the new usage arrive naturally, as language does, from the people.
Ok, another quibble. We agree that the simplistic notions regarding the two sexes are not true. Thus some who appear female do not have XX chromosomes. There are other sexual ambiguities as well. But all that that tells us is that there are “mistakes” in nature. Nature makes mistakes about sex and makes mistakes about almost any other attribute (for example, we see among humans folks who are a lot smaller than normal, so a 4,7″ male.. ).
And then there is the word normal. I guess we are not allowed to use normal any more – lest someone be made sad. But normal is a clear and simple word that expresses a concept we all recognize… and that is something that is typical of its type. So a 4’7″ male is not normal. Neither is a 7′ 0″ female. Sexual ambiguity is not normal.
I plant tomatoes each year and sometimes a few tomatoes are not normal.
I hope that this is enough on the subject.
We don’t use normal to blame or besmirch but normal as a concept is useful.
A typical male mates with a female. This is normal (typical). Do we recognize that some males and females don’t form pair bonds with their sexual opposite? Is this typical? It is common enough that it has a category all its own… but it still does not make it “normal.” Maybe we can hold back on using the word abnormal – but if one looks at medical tests (such as lab results) normal and abnormal are used all the time.
We don’t have to make normal a value judgement. So guys can have sex all they want with other guys. And girls can fuck girls. But such behavior is at best represents a minority.
So what do we do with those who don’t feel comfortable in their bodies? So men who feel that their male body is a mistake. This may not be a new problem, but what is new is that ability to administer hormones or to perform drastic surgeries to create a new human body. For most of the history of humans, if someone felt discontent over their body at best they could do would have been to crossdress.
We can recognize that discomfort about ones body is terrible, even life threatening. But their delusion (and it can be seen as a delusion) cannot be made to discount the reality of female life. Females (women) do grow up as smaller and weaker than their male colleagues. As they mature they must confront the reality that pregnancy is a risk every time they engage is sex. Men do not experience the same natural history, nor the same risk. Nor do transwomen experience this.
For those on the left we must tell them that it is absurd to imagine that average folks can be forced to use social science jargon (so cis-gender et al). Also absurd is assuming we can just put the new women on women’s sports teams. For some sports this may be fine – but for every sport? We just don’t know,
So for me… Transwomen are not exactly the same as women.
But for conservatives, we must ask why (since trans youth are a small minority) are they making such a big deal?
